1958 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner Hardtop Convertible.
The 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner was the world's first fully automatic retractable hardtop
manufactured from 1957 to 1959. During the three year period there were 48,393 produced,
however due to the complexity of the mechanism, very few survive today. As of June 2000 the
International Ford Retractable Club has been able to account for 2710 in existance worldwide.
The mechanism is powered by seven reversible electric motors that are controlled by 10 power relays
and protected by 9 automatically resetting circuit breakers. The position of the many different elements
is sensed during the operation witha network of twelve multi-pole, double throw limit switches and over six
hundred feet of wiring. The entire operation is controlled by a single switch and takes less thanone minute.
The Skyliner is factory equipped with a 352 cubic inch 300 horsepower Thunderbird interceptro engine,
Cruise-O-Matic three speed automatic transmission, Master Guide power steering and Sure Swift power brakes.
Additional options include Sport spare wheel carrier, Bumper mounted rear deflectors, Town and Country
signal seeking radio, MagicAir heater, Aquamatic windshield washer, Inside Non-glare mirror,Backup lights,
Fender Shields, Whitewall tires and more!
