May-Treanor Makes History with 73rd Career Win at AVP Crocs Tour Toyota Hermosa Beach Open Presented by Bud Light
Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers Take Home the Men’s Title
HERMOSA BEACH, Calif., May 20, 2007 – Misty May-Treanor became the winningest player in the history of women’s beach volleyball with her win at the AVP Crocs Tour Hermosa Beach Open presented by Bud Light. May-Treanor and partner Kerri Walsh defeated Tyra Turner and Rachel Wacholder in the final, 21-15, 21-11, earning May-Treanor her 73rd career victory. Holly McPeak previously held the record with 72 career wins.
However, despite making history, May-Treanor quickly voiced her committed dedication to partner Kerri Walsh. She said she would prefer to focus on team accomplishments, such as the team win record held by Randy Stoklos and Sinjin Smith.
“We want to beat Randy and Sinjin’s record (of 114),” May-Treanor said. “I’d rather have a team victory than individual.”
Holly McPeak, who discovered May-Treanor in 2000, previously held the all-time victory record at 72.
“I’m very proud,” McPeak said. “It was bound to happen. I think Misty is a great player. She’s one of the greats. She’s going to expand on this. Sinjin (139) and Karch (148) are not safe at this point.”
May-Treanor and Walsh began the day with a loss to April Ross and Jen Boss. Boss and Ross defeated the duo in a three-game match, 21-23, 24-22, 12-10, but later fell in the women’s semifinal to Turner and Wacholder. May-Treanor and Walsh then battled through the contender’s bracket to reach the semifinal, defeating Elaine Youngs and Nicole Branagh, 21-15, 21-17, to make it to the final.
Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers were victorious on the men’s side today, taking home their fourth title on the AVP Crocs Tour this season. The top-seeded duo defeated No. 4 seed Matt Olson and Jason Ring in the final, 21-17, 21-12. It was the first appearance in the men’s final for Olson and Ring, who defeated No. 3 seed Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger in the semifinal, 21-18, 14-21, 15-13. Dalhausser and Rogers defeated No. 5 seed Dax Holdren and Jeff Nygaard in the other men’s semifinal, 21-11, 21-12.
