TOP SEEDED TEAMS KERRI WALSH AND MISTY MAY-TREANOR AND PHIL DALHAUSSER/TODD ROGERS CAPTURE THIRD STRAIGHT TITLE AT AVP CROCS TOUR CUERVO GOLD CROWN HUNTINGTON BEACH OPEN
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. May 3, 2008 - Top seeded teams of Phil Dalhausser / Todd Rogers and Misty May-Treanor / Kerri Walsh won their third straight tournament, taking home the AVP Crocs Tour Cuervo Gold Crown Huntington Beach Open title.
Dalhausser and Rogers faced off with Southern California locals John Hyden (Sherman Oaks, Calif) and Brad Keenan (Santa Ana, Calif) who entered the tournament ranked third. Dalhausser/Rogers worked through early deficits in both games and prevailed taking the championship in two, winning 21-14 and 22-20.
“Brad was actually a real tricky guy to block,” Said Dalhausser. “He’s not uniform - he’s kind of a weird guy offensively. I don’t mean that in a bad way, because he sided out great. He’s actually a hard gut to block. He actually reaches - a standing reach - three inches higher than I do. He has super long arms. He’s coming along. He’s 26, so two finals - that’s pretty good.”
“We started playing kind of well, but serving Todd,” said Hyden “I couldn’t run anything down, and he was hitting over and around Brad. That really got them going, and then we made some mistakes. The big difference in the first game was Phil’s serving.”
May-Treanor and Walsh matched up with the fourth-ranked team of Tyra Turner and Rachel Wacholder twice today, prevailing in both the quarter finals, 21-13 and 21-15 and finals in two games, 21-17 and 22-20. With this win, May-Treanor/Walsh secure their third straight Huntington Beach title and fifth all-time, marking the most wins at any single location for the duo who’s career record in Huntington is now 33-1.
“She’s a stud” said Walsh of her partner May-Treanor “She’s getting better every tournament. She makes key plays like she did today all the time, but I still see her getting better, which is huge.”
