FUERBRINGER/JENNINGS REPEAT AT AVP CROCS SLAM SAN DIEGO
Turner/Wacholder won the women’s final, Turner’s first-ever tournament title
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - August 3, 2008 - Sixth-seeded Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings successfully defended their AVP Crocs Slam San Diego title Sunday, beating No. 1 seed Nick Lucena and Sean Scott, 19-21, 21-17, 15-11.
“If I find out, I will call you, let you know, bottle it up and sell it,” said Fuerbringer on the secret to winning in San Diego, a feat he’s now done twice; the first time was in 2005, the last time the Tour came through. “It’s just great.”
To get to the final, Fuerbringer/Jennings beat 15th-seeded Cinderella story Russ Marchewka and Mike Placek. The San Diego champions rallied from a 8-1 deficit to win the first game 24-22 and take the second, 21-15.
For the women, Tyra Turner won her first-ever AVP Crocs Tour event when she and partner Rachel Wacholder (seeded fifth) beat second-seeded Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan, 21-16, 19-21, 15-10.
“Woohoo! I’m going to Sea World!” Turner said. “I am! Tonight, I have tickets. No, it feels great. Every victory gives you a lot of confidence. I think, for us, it was something we were missing. So, to take a victory is wonderful.”
Tied 4-4 in the third and deciding game, Turner/Wacholder went on a four-point run to get ahead for good.
Turner/Wacholder made the final after upsetting No. 1-seeded Jennifer Boss and April Ross, 21-18, 15-21, 15-12, in the semifinals Sunday.
“To have our top four teams en route to the Olympic Games and have such scintillating finals back here in San Diego is a great sign for our Tour,” said Leonard Armato, AVP CEO and commissioner, of the three-game finals. “This type of parity is an exciting sign for not only now, but the future as well.”
