The 2008 Surf Dog Surf a Thon was a real hit for dogs, dog owners, vendors and 2000+ guests and dog owners who attended. The event is sponsored by The Helen Woodward Animal Shelter and the money raised goes to help programs for homeless animals of all kinds in San Diego County.
"The weather was perfect and the waves are great", said Dawn Kennedy from Tierra Santa, "this is our second year here to come watch the dogs surf and we have seen some great rides" .
The event featured some of the "stars" from last year including "Bandit the Biker Dog" and "Buddy the Surf Dog". Both dogs catch waves that went to shore and showcased not only their skill, but the dedication of the owners to work with them and develop their ability.
"There are many dog owners here who would rather watch since they have not had time to practice with their dogs in the water", said dog owner Terry Hedge.
The Helen Woodward Animal Shelter had scheduled three weekends leading into the event to let dog owners come out and try to train their dogs to surf before the event.
This years even also featured the "Doggie Surf Costume Contest" and included "The Girls Next Door" star Bridget Marquardt and her dog Wednesday as guest judges.
